Stay safe out there

IUPUI is full of places to go, things to do, and people to meet. It’s a busy campus, and we share it not only with our fellow Jaguars, but also with residents and visitors of Indianapolis. Whether you’re driving, walking, biking, or riding through campus, take the pledge to keep yourself and others safe.

The pedestrian safety pledge

  • Be cautious and courteous to fellow drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and riders.
  • Practice patience when driving, walking, cycling, or riding on campus.
  • Obey all traffic signals and stop signs.

Pledge your safety and others’

Pedestrian safety isn’t just for pedestrians

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Help ensure IUPUI is a safe place for everyone traveling to and through our campus.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep your eyes up and your phones down.
  • Keep at least one ear free so you can hear what’s happening around you.
  • Pay close attention to construction zones and SLOW down.
  • Be patient. Together we’ll all get where we need to go.

If you are DRIVING on campus:

  • Don’t text and drive.
  • Slow down and obey the posted speed limit.
  • Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning at an intersection with a traffic light. Obey all “no turn on red” signs.
  • Look for stopped vehicles—they could be stopping for pedestrians. Indiana law requires all vehicles to stop if approaching a vehicle from the rear that has stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian.
  • When entering crosswalk areas, drive slowly, look for pedestrians and cyclists, and be prepared to stop.

If you are WALKING on campus:

  • Don’t text and walk.
  • Cross the street only at marked crosswalks and intersections.
  • Stop and look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Use pedestrian push buttons and obey “walk” and “don’t walk” signals.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to confirm they see you. Never assume they do, even with eye contact.

If you are BIKING on campus:

  • Don’t text and ride.
  • Ride cautiously and make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians.
  • Cross the street only at marked crosswalks and intersections.
  • Don’t ride on the sidewalk. If you’re riding on a street that has a designated bike lane, use it.
  • Don’t ride the wrong way. Always ride in the same direction as vehicle traffic, not against it.
  • Don’t stop in a stopped vehicle’s blind spot.
  • Signal your turns.
  • Always wear a helmet.

If you are RIDING A SCOOTER on campus:

  • Don’t text and ride.
  • Obey all rules of the road, including traffic signs and signals.
  • Don’t ride on the sidewalk. If you’re riding on a street that has a designated bike lane, use it.
  • Yield to pedestrians and be prepared to stop.
  • Keep your eyes up and one ear free so you can see and hear what’s happening around you.
  • Always wear a helmet.

Wherever you’re going, get there safely
